Death of a Legend

I write to report the passing of a legend in the world of hot dogs. Alan S. Geisler, the creator of one of New York’s most famous condiments, the tangy red onion sauce, died on January 6th at the age of 78. His obituary appeared in The Record of Bergen County, New Jersey.

I first read about Mr. Geisler’s death in the New York Time’s City Room blog.  Jennifer 8. Lee (don’t ask me about the middle name), the post’s author, waxed a bit philosophical: “The endurance of the red onion sauce reminds us that that different cities, different regions, different countries have their different styles of hot dogs.”  How true, and what an excellent way to be remembered.
